Life changing decision

Why am I saying this ?

Work can be very fulfilling when one is motivated and a person can enjoy what work one does .

I disliked the work I did at the early stage of my career . As a result I was not happy.

I absented myself often, taking full advantage of all the leave I had whether it was casual, sick or privilege leave.

This went on for many years . I got transferred to another unit of my organisation and was also given a temporary posting at another. Finally I was given a third transfer where the work was tough and stressful .

At this time, I realised something very important : Who am I serving ? Is it only the boss ? At every unit where I was transferred, the boss had changed .

How do I cope with the different bosses ? Then one day it struck me that there is only one boss for not only my career at work, but for my entire life. This boss is my God who has created the entire universe .

From that day onwards I worked with renewed vigour. I began to enjoy what I was doing and work became fruitful.

Soon the time came to move on, as my company was not doing well and there were serious efforts to downsize by offering ‘VRS’ which is a voluntary retirement scheme. I applied along with many others, but was not released.

At this time, the Lord gave me courage and wisdom to leave . Teaching always appealed to me. Soon I got a job as a lecturer in a college. My work was noticed by my seniors and subsequently I was offered the position of ‘Principal’. With this position and my experience in senior management in the previous job I was offered a job as Senior Manager of a 4 star hotel.

That proved the most successful part of my career. It was a Christian organisation.

With the cooperation of the person I reported to, we recruited many young people, and introduced many changes like the entire computerisation of the booking system, a fire safety project and a licence for the restaurant, besides upgrading the menus.

So in the end it was the realisation of my service to the Lord Jesus that I saw this successful progress. Eventually when I finished my work career, I was called to lead my church community, which was truly the culmination of my service to the Lord !

Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord. (Ephesians 6:7,8a )

Do you Perceive

It’s in details that a lot is discovered .

How does one understand this ?

I was not too interested in details : It’s only when doing sugar craft flowers that this aspect became important .

Each flower has so much to see and carve. Just imagine how God has created so much beauty and variety . Just visit the hills in summer and see the wild flowers . I won’t even know the various names , to the extent of the range of diversity .

Artists are good at perception . They look at details around them in nature and human beings too . They can bring out the character of a person so well . Every detail of expression of the face is brought out in the drawing or painting .

Authors do this in words which give a picture in the mind of the reader. I think this can be more detailed . The reader actually sees the person featured in his mind .

However will it be the same for every reader of the same lines written by the author .

That’s debatable . It all depends on how much is written by the author and likewise perceived by the reader .

The Waiting Game

(Rewards for patience)

Nothing comes easy ; specially when you have  to wait  for permissions, or sanctions . All around us , people speak of getting things done and facilitating the process by paying a fee ( I call it a bribe)

Do you agree ?. Does the  time factor decide whether it is right to bribe or not.

Who is guilty? The giver or the taker ? If there was no giver, would there be a taker?

My experience still upholds the age old ways of patience, persistence and prayer. Believe me it works .

Outstanding cases  for permissions are from the Municipal Corporation, Provident Fund department, and Collector’s Office. There are good people in these places. Please do not prejudge them, and conduct yourself on that aspect. Follow all the guidelines, and also followup; even if it means going 10,15 or 20 times..

When you respect others you  will be respected for your patience and honesty….why honesty. Because the giver of a bribe is dishonest and causes another to be dishonest.

Be happy when you taste success for your patience. The Lord above will bless you abundantly.

If anyone tells you that times have changed….please remember, honesty, respect, and love of neighbor will never lose value.

There is another angle to seeking expeditious help in such matters. Have you tried praying?

Not only for yourself, but even for those from whom you seek these permissions/sanctions.

After all authority is bestowed , and God answers prayers

When  the shoe is worn  on the other foot, you will see the difficulty that such authorities face in being just and honest. Most often , they have to deal with people who are ready to pay their way through , but they also face pressures from political sources in power.

Our ability to respect authority and accept the requirements for sanctions will be a big help for those who will eventually grant your requests.

I have been a beneficiary of following this precept, and have great peace of mind…

So remember, its always two way..

The waiting game is all about patience, trust and respect..

The correct use or abuse of the chair, will decide on two people : take a guess!

Do you believe? Are you ready?

Then be prepared for the ‘Waiting Game’.

Sohel ….  My quiet neighbour

What did I know about Sohel Degani?

ActuDSC_0224ally nothing much.  Yes I knew him as a neigbour who had moved into Matharpacady in 1960, as a young  lad with  his sister and his parents. Later as the years passed by,  he got  involved in horticulture and landscaping. He soon had a family of his own but kept touch with his parents. So when he invited me one day to see his parental home ( both parents have since passed away) I was stunned.

The home was transformed into a studio and office for his creative work.

His late father was actively involved in the Deaf and Dumb Institute, where he was the Principal, and his mother an excellent teacher. Sohel is happily married with two daughters. His wife too loves teaching, and is a Professor with the ICT ( Institute of Chemical Technology – where she is the Head of Department of Pharmacy)

After schooling in St. Mary’s, Mazagon, Sohel specialized in Landscape Designing and Agrohorticulture with initial studies in Canada. He returned home , to complete his Masters Degree in the above field.

Being  a fitness enthusiast he played various sports like , basketball, badminton, cycling and tabletennis,…. He later took to Jogging, Swimming, and Squash.

He had a great fondness  for the rustic life… at Alibag, on the outskirts of Mumbai . He would go alone on a trip, take a  dip into the river and enjoy nature in all its splendor at his Organic Farm, where he grows tropical fruits.

His wife Mariam can be quite the opposite , when she immerses herself in books for hours.

Both dream of giving time to the underprivileged in the villages.

Sohel specializes in  Landscape Designing and  is self taught in all aspects civil works, plumbing, designing, electrical, and soft landscape. He is a Landscaping Designer and Agrohorticulture Consultant.

A dozen staff  help to implement the designs he creates.

He started  designing numerous  landscapes for residences,  and eventually moved to bigger projects like Wockdhart Corporate Office and  Impetus . You will know more about his work from the web site www.minigardens.net , his company name being Mini Gardens.

He is totally into organic gardening, with natural products, and avoids the use of pesticides

He selectively serves clients who will care for the finished work even years later, and ensures that all his work complies with existing norms.

His Design on Paper goes into details like measured ground, type of soil and its mixture at various levels actual plant types and numbers.. swimming pools, terrace gardens,  beautiful facades, and lighting  etc.

His motto in life “ I enjoy my work , so it becomes more of  fun rather than work”.

The reason for this blog  however is to focus on Sohel’s latest passion : ‘ Painting’

He  thrives on this , as it gives him so much peace.

He starts his day at 4.50am and after freshening up, he spends time in quietness, and yoga… in Vipasana mode, followed by breakfast.

At 6am he starts painting and can spend at least 4 hours  , with pencil, brush, cotton, cloth and water colors, which look quiet ordinary until its all put together. He uses a very superior quality of paper.

Thereafter he proceeds to visit his project sites , and is very involved as a person who is“  hands on”.

He has dinner between 7.30-8pm and retires to bed at 9.30pm

I enquired about his creativity….. and he replied “ I sleep and my thoughts churn through the night . I remember these dreams, and implement them in my work and paintings.”

My time of meditation also helps to kickstart ideas.

He also shared that “ I acknowledge God, but avoid structured religion. I believe in reaching out to the underprivileged with good deeds.” I was surprised when he shared how he has had some major accidents, when he fractured both legs; but his recovery is also amazing ….grace?

Sohel’s paintings were a revelation. I saw beautiful sea side paintings …boats on the shore, out at sea, stormy seas, horses with diamonds , shepherds  and one with a deformed hand…innovated when he mistakenly drew a shortened hand., shades of blue and pastel colours. One painting stood out as it depicted the ‘Women’  who face challenges in city life unsure of their way ahead…even a little girl among them…

“Why the interest in boats and the seaside? “ I enquired.

“ It gives me a sense of the Infinite. I get excited to explore the vast seas and return on those boats after a long voyage.” He treasures two models of ancient boats ; one was gifted to him in Africa.

Sohel intends to exhibit these paintings and utilize the funds from their purchase, for the girl child  in India.

I realized that Sohel had so many other interests…He has a roof garden with an Olive tree, various herbs, water plants, terraniums which is a glass globe  and has  plants which require a little water and more air. There are bonsai plants and some plants which supply more oxygen indoors. Vermiculture helps in good manure from waste leaves and twigs.

Another passion is his collection for pens….in particular , Parker, Shaeffers  and some penholder with inkpot.

I was quite intrigued when Sohel shared, “My desk is the place that  I can sit and enjoy every moment doing my creative work, be it designing for landscape or paintings.”

“So what is your message for us Sohel? “

“Live life fully; have pure thoughts, be yourself, and enjoy what you do.” came Sohel’s reply.

Lets all benefit from his open secret to make our ‘doing’ more fun.

Sohel’s completed paintings are packed and ready; so are they for sale? He softly replied “That will have to wait until my proposed exhibition, to raise funds for the Girl Child.”

I am reminded about the parable of the talents when the one who makes full use of his talents is greatly rewarded and will hear from the Master  “ Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master’s happiness.” (Matthew 25:23)

Now I know my quiet neighbor even better ; specially his capacity for doing good, with joy!

‘To Be’

‘To Be’

The gift awaits
As the day draws near;
Who are you?
The giver or the gift?
He came : The true light
In Him was life.
The life that is the light of man.

Are you ready?
To receive Him
The priceless gift,
And best of all?
His light shines in the darkness
And even today darkness cannot overcome it.

Then be a child once more,
Be born again,
Be transformed
Into His likeness
Reconcile, Renew and
Be His gift,
To your brother and sister.

‘In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.'( John 1:4,5)

Wish you the love, joy and peace of Christmas!

Excel in Love

Be Excellent

The perfect stride
And swiftness beyond compare
The Youthful mind
Seeks to  dare!
Without a care!

How long and many
A time the race goes to
The fleet of foot who do not tarry.
Pray is this always True
For me and You?

Oft times, the feet fail
As years go by.
But then let love prevail,
As we strive to excel,
For love never ends.

Romans 16 : 19
‘ be excellent in what is good’
